Leading up to International Women's Day, we spoke to key women in the meeting and event industry about their roles.
How do you manage stress?
I find that either heading to the gym or walking outside is the best stress reliever. I have been known to walk at 10 p.m. in the dark—but it’s amazing how it clears your mind.
Describe a game-changing idea that you have implemented.
As we all know, perceptions about our destinations can sometimes be inaccurate. In my last destination, we had some perception challenges. We launched an edgy campaign that squarely put “the elephant in the room”—and by involving planners in our marketing campaign, we were able to correct those perceptions. We are using a similar approach in Puerto Rico to share the message that our destination is definitely ready for business.
What would you like your legacy to be?
The decision to join the team at Discover Puerto Rico was an easy one. It’s an honor to sell and market this destination. Every success we achieve will dramatically help the people of Puerto Rico. I would like our legacy to be that we brought immeasurable economic growth to this amazing island.
What’s the best advice someone gave you?
That the best career starts when you learn the entry-level jobs and move your way up. I started in the attractions industry and sold tickets before moving into sales and marketing. This experience is invaluable because you understand the end game.
What do you love about your job?
I love how my role connects group sales and marketing. Having been in sales positions for the past 15 years, I found that my priorities had become much more marketing-focused due to the changing digital buying environment. I am excited to make the transition over to a marketing position, solely focused on the meeting and convention market.
