5 Questions with Kitty Ratcliffe, Explore St. Louis

By Blair Potter

Kitty Ratcliffe (MPI St. Louis Area Chapter) is president of Explore St. Louis, which is the driving force behind the St. Louis region’s US$5.8 billion convention and tourism industry.

What strategies can help women achieve a more prominent role in our industry?

Women make great leaders but are still under-represented in executive leadership roles and on boards of directors. So we need to be intentional about removing the barriers that keep women from advancing into leadership positions. I try to honor those who helped me on my journey by widening the path for the next generation of women leaders.

What was your very first job?

When I was in high school, it took a job waiting tables at a Big Boy’s. Not only was it hard work, but it was also a great way to learn responsibility. Most importantly, it taught me many people skills that I still carry with me today.

What have you learned from the challenges you have faced?

I’ve faced some unique challenges that have helped shape me as a leader and a tourism professional. From natural disasters to social justice issues, I’ve found these challenges become opportunities for communities to rebuild and become stronger for the long term, as well as serving as a blueprint for other cities to follow.

What do you love about your job?

Without question, it is our people. It is their commitment and passion to provide world-class experiences to our more than 26 million annual visitors that inspire me every day. From our talented team at Explore St. Louis to all the employees who work in our region’s hospitality industry, they make St. Louis a special destination.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career?

It has to be right now and representing St. Louis with the transformation that is bringing new attractions, hotels, investors and artisans to help reshape the landscape of our community. This energy is being pulsed throughout our region, bringing renewed vibrancy to our convention corridor that is visible to both meeting planners and their attendees.
