Christine Roberts, MPI Foundation Executive Director, Resigns

Christine Roberts, who served as executive director for the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Foundation, on Thursday resigned her position with the meeting and event industry association.

The announcement follows recent published reports in which Roberts, during her previous tenure as vice president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) CVB, was accused of improperly steering more than $250,000 of Broward County business to her boyfriend’s companies over a three-year period, according to a county inspector general’s report. The allegations of impropriety occurred between 2012-2015, according to the report.

“We thank Christine for her service to MPI and the MPI Foundation and wish her success as she pursues her next opportunities,” said Darren Temple, chief operations officer for MPI.

He added that while Roberts maintains her innocence in regards to the allegations, “she recognizes the potential distraction of her continued association with an organization defined by its commitment to the highest standards of ethics, accounting and transparency. It was for this reason that she has chosen to resign.”

Temple said that MPI is committed to fiduciary excellence and has been conducting its own, internal review upon learning of the allegations.

“While this review will continue and include a full, independent review, we have so far found nothing to suggest any deviation from our normal procedures or that might otherwise jeopardize our exceptional fiscal health or our continued leadership in the meeting and event industry,” he said.

Roberts joined MPI in September 2017, and set strategic and financial goals as well as directed fundraising and operational activities for the foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds to support grants and scholarships, career opportunities and education for members and chapters. The foundation also funds industry research and pan-industry initiatives.
