Designing for impact at IMEX America

Designing for impact at IMEX America

By Lori Pugh CMP, CMM

Every fall, I feel the same spark: a mix of anticipation, urgency and joy—because IMEX America is around the corner. This year will be my ninth IMEX America, and I still get that first-day-of-school feeling. The people, the energy, the ideas—it all reminds me why I love this work.

So, when the planning began, the team started with the question: “What does real impact look like on Day 1 of IMEX America?” From there, Lexi Roberts, learning operations specialist at MPI, and Tim Luepke, director of the MPI Academy, reverse-engineered Smart Monday to turn IMEX’s 2025 Talking Point—Impact 2.0—from a theme into a throughline you can feel in every room.

Impact 2.0 challenges us to move past inspiration for its own sake. It’s about practical momentum—programming that activates purpose equips industry professionals with tools and creates outcomes that last beyond Las Vegas.

What makes Smart Monday so powerful is that it’s not just a standalone day of education; it’s the product of a longstanding partnership between MPI and IMEX. For more than a decade, MPI has served as the official education partner for IMEX America, shaping Smart Monday into the launchpad for the week ahead. Together, we’ve built a program that reflects shared values: pushing the industry forward through innovation, inclusion and meaningful connection.

Every Smart Monday session was designed to translate “impact” into action across sustainability, DEI, leadership and innovation. Lexi and Tim prioritized voices with lived experience and fresh perspective—underrepresented leaders, rising talent and cross-industry experts who challenge us to rethink how we design, deliver and measure results. The return of She Means Business underscores that commitment, centering gender equity and inclusive leadership at the heart of the day rather than on the margins and elevating conversations that move us from performative to transformative progress.

Smart Monday is designed as a catalyst—not a warm-up. Before the show floor even opens, thousands of professionals gather to set an intention for the week ahead. By the end of the day, we want attendees to feel energized, challenged and connected to new ideas so that IMEX America becomes more than a series of meetings—it becomes a week-long experience fueled by purpose.

That’s the power of partnership. With MPI shaping the Smart Monday education and IMEX amplifying the platform, it has become the industry’s ignition point. And thanks to the leadership of Lexi Roberts and Tim Luepke, Impact 2.0 won’t just be a talking point in 2025—it will be a lived experience that reminds us of the role we all play in shaping what comes next.

Registration is open. If you’re ready to convert purpose into practice, join us at IMEX America’s Smart Monday and see how MPI and IMEX are designing the future—together.
