Flipping the Norm

Flipping the Norm

By Mikayla Milburn

Even at the liveliest of events it’s easy to get lost in the crowd and start feeling disconnected. Not to mention that once you find people to network with, it can be a drain on valuable time just trying to break the ice.

At IMEX America, Sept. 10-12 in Las Vegas, MPI Academy Director Jessie States will give attendees five fun ice breakers they can use to remove inconvenient awkwardness and get to know one another in a fully interactive session titled “Five Funky Ice Breakers: Your IMEX America Un-Keynote Experience.”

This innovative program will feature a learning experience focused on three things: discovering why it is important to include activities in education sessions, experimenting with ways attendees can connect and discussing how fun can be implemented in learning environments. The un-keynote will be fully interactive and will not feature a traditional lecture. Instead, States is going to connect with attendees and have them connect with each other in a real-time demonstration on how interconnectivity can be used in education.

MPI is in the business of pushing the envelope when it comes to education, and States says it is important as education innovators to create an un-keynote that pushes the boundaries of expectations.

“Traditionally, MPI has offered a keynote the last day of IMEX America. But why do the expected?” she says. “We want to take the opportunity to do the opposite of a keynote, which is why we are designing and delivering on this un-keynote experience.”

States, previously the head of meeting innovation at MPI, knows that innovation, or rather disruption, is a necessary means of flipping the norm on its head and improving the industry in unexpected ways. For instance, as she will demonstrate at IMEX America, providing a fun and interactive experience assists in the learning, retention and application process of education.

“In order for MPI to deliver on its promise of providing industry-leading and bleeding-edge education, we must stay at the forefront of how education can and should be designed and delivered,” States says. “Further, we should be the first to experiment with new formats so that our community doesn’t have to. They can see, feel and experience how education can be delivered differently, what works and, frankly, what doesn’t.”

MPI Education at IMEX America
