GMID Brings Worldwide Attention to Meetings and Events

GMID Brings Worldwide Attention to Meetings and Events

By Blair Potter

Meeting and event industry advocates came together on 6 April in communities around the world to celebrate the value of face-to-face meetings and the impact of the industry on global business and economies.

Industry professionals, joined in many locations by business leaders, educators and elected officials, united for the second annual Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID), an initiative spearheaded by the Meetings Mean Business (MMB) coalition.

More than 100 events in more than 90 locations across 25 countries and six continents gathered with one objective in mind—bring attention to the importance and impact that face-to-face plays in generating jobs, business and economic growth from business meetings, conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions.

Phil Cross says the MPI Spain Chapter took a different strategic path in 2017.

“In the past, the chapter has tried to deliver the same content across the country, regardless of the local needs,” he says. “We achieved good positioning of the OrgulloMice / GMID event, but there was always mixed feedback. In 2017, we took feedback from the past editions and catered the content, the timing and the format 100 percent to local needs. We concentrated on quality and real interest from local community stakeholders—key CVBs from Valencia, Granada, Madrid and Barcelona.”

He says the four regional events combined to host more than 600 attendees, with topics ranging from the happiness in the workplace to innovative thinking to event security (which included the head of local law enforcement speaking to attendees in Madrid). The key objectives of the events were directly connected to the three principal values of GMID: personal connections, positive business outcomes and building strong communities.
