Meeting pros are ready for anything in 2023, Part 2

By Blair Potter

This month, we’re chatting with several MPI chapter presidents about important trends they have their eye on and why they’re optimistic about the meeting and event industry in 2023. Today, we hear from Katie Risher of the North Florida Chapter and Marina Parra-Flechsig of the Germany Club.

All these interviews and much more can be found in “Trends of 2023,” an eBook created by MPI and Meetings today. Download your free copy now.

Tell us about a meeting and event trend you’ll be closely watching in 2023.

I am very interested to see what food and beverage trends will gain popularity this year. With meeting and event design being more creative and innovative, this requires more out-of-the-box thinking for planners and suppliers working on customized menus for groups to help create a more immersive experience, while also still working within a specific budget.

What are you most optimistic about as a new year in meetings and events gets under way?

In-person meetings are back in full force! It is exciting to see little to no restrictions for travel and meeting face to face, but also still being able to stay connected through hybrid events. The hybrid event model will continue to be chosen because this offers the ability to connect in ways we never were able to before. Work schedules will never be less busy, so it is nice to be able to have the option to participate when schedules are not as flexible, but also to be able to connect face to face.

What have you learned over the past three years that has made you a better meeting professional?

The hospitality and event industry is resilient, creative and adaptable. I have been challenged personally and professionally over the past few years more than ever, but it has provided me with opportunities to travel the world with my clients and provide better event experiences. It has also provided more opportunities for me to connect with the greater MPI community and gain friendships and network relationships that are so invaluable!

Conversion periods are shorter than ever, and that will be the new rule. This is a big challenge, as services may not be available as requested, but it is also a great opportunity for suppliers to shine!

Remote work is a fact and teams are scattered throughout the globe.

What are you most optimistic about as a new year in meetings and events gets under way?

The number of participants at live events is growing and budgets are strong—similar to or higher than pre-COVID.

What have you learned over the past three years that has made you a better meeting professional?

In terms of team management, the key is to stay flexible and work towards excellence. Quality is much more valuable than quantity and it is important that we focus on results and find the right balance between our clients’ requirements and our team needs.
