What’s in it for you? 3 LinkedIn strategies for the naysayers

In the ever-evolving landscape of the meeting and event industry, staying connected and relevant is not just a necessity—it’s a game changer. LinkedIn, often misunderstood as merely a job-hunting platform, is, in fact, a goldmine for industry professionals.

Whether you’re an event planner, hotel sales manager or destination marketer, embracing LinkedIn can transform your professional trajectory. Let’s debunk the myths and explore three powerful LinkedIn strategies tailor-made for our industry.

1. Personal branding: More than just a buzzword

The idea that personal branding is reserved for the creatives or the corporate elite is a myth. In our industry, where relationships and reputation are everything, your LinkedIn profile is your digital handshake. Start by refining your profile: a professional headshot, a compelling headline that encapsulates your role and passion and a summary that tells your story (not just your job description). Share insights about your experiences in hotel site selection or your innovative event planning approach. Remember, your profile is your personal brand’s storefront and can help you attract the ideal community member to your product or service.

2. Content creation: Engaging, not overwhelming

Many shy away from content creation, fearing it requires constant creativity or that everything has already been said. The truth is, sharing your unique perspective on industry trends or your day-to-day challenges and triumphs can be incredibly impactful. Start small: Post about a recent event you organized, share an article about industry trends with your takeaways or celebrate a colleague’s success. Still overwhelmed? Jump into a conversation in one of the many active meeting and event LinkedIn groups! The goal is to engage, not to overwhelm. Your insights, however simple, add value and showcase your expertise.

3. Networking: Beyond job hunting

The misconception that LinkedIn is only useful when job hunting is far from the truth, especially in our industry. LinkedIn is a networking powerhouse. Engage with your connections’ posts, join LinkedIn groups related to meetings and events and don’t hesitate to reach out to new contacts. A quick message commending someone’s work or seeking advice can open doors to collaborations and opportunities far beyond the job market. Open your network to those that want to learn from you, work with you, work for you or refer you. It’s about building relationships, not just a contact list.

LinkedIn can be an indispensable tool for professionals in the meeting and event industry. It’s a platform for personal branding, a hub for sharing valuable content and a network to connect with like-minded professionals. So, let’s put aside our doubts and harness the power of LinkedIn to elevate our careers and industry.

To your success!

P.S.: If you have any questions or need further insights on leveraging LinkedIn for your professional growth, don’t hesitate to share. Your queries might just spark the next big discussion in our community!
