Embracing the Power of Volunteering

Embracing the Power of Volunteering

By Simone Farrar, CMP

Volunteering has always been more than just a way to pass the time for me; it's a heartfelt commitment to giving back and making a positive difference in my community. My journey with Meeting Professionals International (MPI) started with a simple yet profound desire: I wanted to be part of something bigger, to contribute to the growth of the events industry, and to challenge any misconceptions people might have about our work.

Six months after joining MPI, my enthusiasm for getting involved grew stronger after attending WEC2019. The energy at the conference was contagious, with everyone around me brimming with passion for the events industry. During one memorable lunch, I had the chance to chat one-on-one with a member of the Diversity Advisory Board. Her insights opened my eyes to the diverse perspectives within our community, sparking a new determination to play a more active role in shaping our profession.

When I started volunteering with MPI, I joined the Experiential Marketing Advisory Board, where I had the opportunity to contribute my expertise and insights to help shape the direction of the board's initiatives.

Following that, I volunteered for two years with the Rise Awards Committee, where I had the privilege of recognizing and celebrating the outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations within the events industry.

And now, I am honored to serve as the chair of the Event Program Review Advisory Board. In this role, I have the responsibility of leading the board in evaluating and providing feedback on event programs to ensure they meet the highest standards of excellence and effectiveness. This role allows me the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the quality of MPI events.

What drew me to volunteer with MPI was seeing how the values of the organization aligned with my own. MPI not only understands the importance of events but is aimed at raising the bar for our industry's professionalism and reputation. In addition, volunteering with MPI is a chance to advocate for positive change and elevate our profession.

To me, one of the most fulfilling parts of volunteering with MPI has been the chance to give back in meaningful ways. Whether it's mentoring aspiring event professionals, sharing my knowledge, or contributing to committees, each opportunity has allowed me to make a real difference in others' lives as well as the event industry. Knowing that my efforts help support the growth of the industry fills me with a deep sense of purpose.

Volunteering with MPI has been crucial for my personal growth. Working alongside industry leaders and fellow volunteers has provided invaluable insights and experiences that have enriched my personal skills.

In essence, volunteering with MPI has been a journey fueled by passion and purpose. It's shown me the incredible things that can happen when individuals come together for a common cause. Looking ahead, I'm eager to continue this journey, to keep contributing, and to inspire others to join me in making a difference in the world of events.
