We spoke with him about exciting new developments in the city, a shift toward legacy-driven events and, of course, what else attendees will experience onsite at EMEC Barcelona.

What’s new in Barcelona that is of interest to meeting planners?
Barcelona continues to evolve as a destination for meetings and events, offering planners exciting new infrastructure and experiences. Among the most recent developments is the major renovation of the CC2 convention centre at Fira Barcelona’s Gran Via. This refurbishment, due to be completed in early 2026, will significantly expand the venue’s capacity and versatility, increasing the number of meeting rooms, adding a dedicated auditorium and introducing a 5,000 m² exhibition area for the first time, making it possible to host events from 500 to thousands of attendees with flexible configurations.
In addition, the city has opened the new Spotify Camp Nou, providing a world-class venue for large-scale events and corporate experiences. Looking ahead, Barcelona will see a series of major transformations from 2027 onwards, including the renovation of Fira Barcelona Montjuïc, the creation of the new Hall 0 at Fira Gran Via and the expansions of key cultural landmarks such as the MNAC and MACBA, offering planners unique spaces that combine heritage, design and versatility.
Accommodation options are also expanding and being refreshed, with new boutique and luxury hotels such as METT Barcelona and SLS Barcelona, as well as renovations of iconic properties like Hotel Arts Barcelona and W Barcelona. These updates provide planners with greater flexibility for group sizes, styles and premium experiences.

What makes Barcelona a popular for destination for meetings and events?
Barcelona is a well-established MICE destination thanks to a unique combination of factors. The city offers world-class infrastructure, a broad and specialized hotel portfolio, excellent congress and convention facilities and global connectivity, making it easy for delegates from around the world to attend. Its compact urban model allows for agile and sustainable transportation, while the wider province of Barcelona provides additional value through unique venues, natural settings and specialized facilities, expanding the possibilities for meetings, incentives and corporate events.
Barcelona also stands out for its commitment to sustainability, recognized by certifications such as Biosphere, and its positioning as a technology and science hub. This vibrant ecosystem of knowledge adds strategic value to professional events hosted in the city. Combined with its rich culture, gastronomy and Mediterranean lifestyle, Barcelona offers an environment that is both productive and inspiring, making it a top choice for meeting planners.

Can you tell us about an event trend you’re experiencing in Barcelona?
Across the global MICE industry, there is a clear shift toward legacy-driven events—meetings and conferences designed to create positive, long-term impact beyond the event itself. This approach reflects a broader evolution in how success is measured, moving beyond attendance and economic impact to include knowledge transfer, social value, sustainability and lasting connections with the destination.
In this context, Barcelona has taken a proactive role by launching the Barcelona Convention Bureau Legacy Program one year ago. The program supports meeting professionals in identifying, designing and implementing legacy initiatives that align with both the objectives of the event and the city’s strategic priorities. By combining expertise, local connections and strategic support, Barcelona helps events create a legacy that lasts long after the conference ends.

Why should meeting professionals be excited about attending EMEC in Barcelona and what they can expect to experience onsite?
